Covid-19 PPE Fees

What is the (Covid-19 / PPE) Fee for Dental offices?

Covid-19 / PPE is a fee that is being implemented by Canadian Dental Clinics to help offset some of the additional costs associated with the mandatory requirements as directed by the Government of New Brunswick, Worksafe NB, New Brunswick Dental Society, New Brunswick College of Dental Hygienists.

All Dental offices in New Brunswick are required to adhere to a specific operational plan that specifies strict procedures related to the prevention and the spread of the Covid-19 Virus.

Covid-19 / PPE cost related Items include (N95 / Kn95 masks, disposable gowns, face shields, hand sanitizer, safety barriers, increased staffing requirements related to necessary covid-19 sanitization practices, costs of regular use items have doubled or tripled in some cases as a result of world wide demand and product shortages.  As an example, disposable gowns that use to cost $1.00 @ are now $15.

The Canadian Dental Association has been meeting with insurance companies for the last few months to address this issue and to work out appropriate solutions. The New Brunswick Dental Society has provided respective insurance codes and PPE fee amounts for Non-Aerosol generating procedure’s ($20 per appointment) and for Aerosol generating procedures ($40 per appointment). Currently, there are a very limited number of insurance companies that have been covering this fee as it takes time to implement this change.

An example of an Aerosol generating procedure would be the use of a Cavitron scaler in Hygiene for heavy tarter removal or in dental procedures where handpieces (ie drills) used.

The PPE fee charged at this office is $20 for non-aerosol generating procedures and $30 for Aerosol generating procedures. This fee will be charged per adult appointment. We are sensitive to this increased cost of service for patients. The PPE fee will not be charged multiple times for families (children that are scheduled on the same day for checkups for example). Also, if a patient is scheduled within a month for follow up care related to an original appointment, they will not be charged an additional PPE fee.

Our goal is to be transparent with respect to the PPE fee and to continue to provide our patients safe and exceptional dental care and to ensure the health and safety of our staff members. We appreciate your understanding and are happy to answer any questions you may have.
